Early Training
Master Vic Coffin
began his journey in karate as a
young boy. His first karate instructor was Chittawa
Lewchalermnwong in Shotokan Karate. Master Coffin first saw
Grandmaster Odo in 1969 on his way to Vietnam while in the
Marine Corps and immediately became interested in the Kobudo (weaponary)
that did not exist in his Shotokan dojo. He began practicing
Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kobudo directly under Grandmaster Odo while
in the Marine Corps and has continued in the discipline since
that time. Master Coffin began teaching in his own dojo in 1978
and has remained a faithful follower and instructor in Okinawa
Kenpo Karate Kobudo. Throughout the years, Grandmaster Odo was a
frequent visitor of the dojo in North Carolina. Master Coffin
and several members of his dojo had the good fortune and honor
to train with Grandmaster Odo just prior to his death in 2002
,when they visited in late January and early February.

Grandmaster Seikichi Odo was born in Okinawa July 26, 1926. Master Odo began karate at the age of 9 and continued his journey as a life long endeavour until his death March 24, 2002. Master Odo was responsible for combining both Okinawan Karate (open hand) and Okinawan Kobudo (weapons) into one system, Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kobudo. His primary instructor was Master Shigero Nakamura, from who he learned Okinawa Kenpo. Upon Master Nakamura's death in 1969, Master Odo became head of the dojo. He was very tenacious about preserving the weapons arts so that future generations could appreciate the "old ways". Master Odo's weapons instructors include Mitsuo Kakazu, Kenko Nakaima, Shimpo Matayoshi and Seike Toma. Master Odo was a man small in stature, but very big in heart and his love for karate and kobudo. He is missed and fondly remembered.
