Kesshin Kan Dojo
Year End 2010

This is the time of year that we find ourselves reflecting over the events of the year. We are happy to find ourselves abundantly blessed once again as we go into the Christmas season and on into 2011. Training has again been excellent and we have many stories to tell.

The Parris Island Triathlon was an even bigger success than year’s past. Mr. Shah set a new record for the swim and I’m happy to report that all who started finished that day! Oorah!!!

The Spring CNC brought us through a microburst safe and sound. Johann cheated and was safe in the bathroom during the storm. Then there was the issue with the tent zipper and I actually heard snoring from two people at the same time that sounded like a rapper would break into song at any minute.

Then there was that miserably, hot SC ride. I’m not sure how much bonding went on during that week, but we all found out a lot about Curtis and his early morning habits.
All kidding aside, training, training, and more training was the focus of the year. The results are very evident in the maturity (did I say that word?) of the students. Anyone who hasn’t seen us in a while is very surprised at the progress and change that has taken place among our seasoned students.

Oh, by the way, we also moved to a new Dojo. What a blessing and a find. We were fast outgrowing our Dojo and it just so happened that Shihan was riding his bike to the dojo in July and low and behold a business was moving out of the most perfect place for us to move to…… And how convenient, just up the street from where we were and away from the busy corner. We have a whole warehouse to work out in, now, but are we headed for outgrowing this space, also? Time will tell.

Then we had the great crash in November. Shihan was completing the bicycle portion of the Wilmington Half Ironman on his less than three week old, brand new carbon bike and was struck by a car just a mile from the finish. Evidently, the person who hit him became impatient waiting and decided to take off, even though the traffic was being stopped by flagmen. We spent a very scary day in the emergency room and several weeks have gone by with many Doctor’s appointments and treatments. The bike was a total loss. No broken bones to report, but many bruises, contusions, sprains, soreness, concussion, etc. Shihan tells everyone that he must have had an 800 pound angel sitting on his shoulders that day, because he landed on his head and at first things didn’t look too good. Both elbows were bashed. His left leg had gashes, major road rash and a huge contusion on his left thigh. His left leg was twice the size of his right for a couple of weeks and he has had about 300 cc’s of fluid aspirated from the inside of his thigh close to the knee. His right foot was giving him fits, as it was majorly sprained and swollen. There is also a dent in his skull that we are told should return to normal? No evidence of that yet. Naturally, the injury has not deterred Shihan from coming to classes. Several of the Black Belts have really pitched in to help with classes during Shihan’s recovery.

Thanks to all for the prayers and well wishes. We are so thankful for the wonderful group of students that we have. God’s blessings to everyone as we look forward to another fantastic year of training!!!

Kyoshi Vic Coffin

My name is Victor D. Coffin and I am a ninth degree black belt in Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kobudo, as taught by the late Grand Master, Seikichi Odo. I have been practicing the art of karate since 1958. I have my own school and have taught consistently since 1974 in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. I am a combat veteran of Vietnam, having served in the United States Marine Corps. My focus of study at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro was physical education.

Our program is designed to assist students in becoming the best they can be at being themselves through karate training. Our goal is to provide quality instruction in the way of Okinawa Kenpo Karate and Kobudo. We provide an atmosphere where students will learn discipline, self confidence and assurance that is brought out of the student through traditional training. Our school provides the student with skills of awareness and preparation in the art of self defense that will provide value throughout the student’s lifetime.

It has been my passion since surviving Vietnam to help men, women and children to become the best that they can be, and to realize the value they have as human beings. I have observed students from all backgrounds with varying degrees of physical and mental abilities grow into confident, well-mannered, and well-disciplined people, whom anyone would be proud to be associated with. We do all this through consistent physical training that is challenging mentally as well as physically.

I believe that our program would greatly benefit any potential student, from children eager with enthusiasm, to people who have been broken by the circumstances that life offers. We begin by introducing the student to physical training that will begin to produce results quickly. We have observed that once a person is able to accomplish even the smallest of goals, confidence begins to emerge. Not only does the physical body begin to become stronger, but the mental self-image one has begins to improve, as well.

Thank you for considering our modest school in you quest for martial arts training.
